Loy Norrix Eyeing SMAC Conference Title

By Matt Streitel

The Loy Norrix men's varsity basketball team huddles after a timeout. The Knights believe the teamwork is the key to success.

On Friday February 17, 2012 the buzzer went off and the Loy Norrix Men’s basketball team knew they were headed to the SMAC East Conference title game.

“I was excited and anxious to get into practice and work hard,” said Loy Norrix junior basketball player Trenton Beamon.

Loy Norrix is back in the SMAC Championship for the first time since winning the game in the 07-08 season. The Knights will look to knock off the Gull Lake Blue Devils, who beat the Knights in the first meeting 65-62, on Friday at Loy Norrix High School.

This is the biggest game of the year for the Knights.

“[The] conference championship is on the line,” said Loy Norrix senior basketball player Damien Hegler.

One goal for the Men’s Knights basketball team was to make it and win the SMAC Championship. “[We have been] preparing for this the whole season,” said Hegler.

The Knights will not take the Blue Devils lightly on Friday night. Losing to them already this season has them excited but focused because they know this is a team that can beat them. The team believes Gull Lake will come out with lots of intensity and fight for every play.

The atmosphere will be very different from a regular home game.

“Intense, emotional and lots of support,” is what Beamon is expecting for the game.

“[The] crowd will be into it,” said Hegler.

The Loy Norrix Knights basketball team is asking for anyone to come out and support the Knights. The more support the better. Also on Friday night, Loy Norrix is holding their second annual Red Out game. Loy Norrix is teaming up with Gull Lake to participate in wearing red for the American Heart Association. Please come support for a good cause by wearing red to the game.

The Lady Knights start off the night at 5:45 p.m. at Loy Norrix High School, looking to spoil Gull Lake’s division title plans. Following will be the Men’s game at 7:15 p.m. also at Loy Norrix High School. Come watch some exciting Knight basketball and support a good cause while doing it.
