Modern Sherlock Holmes Enraptures Audiences Worldwide

The business of entertainment steadily claws for new material, so it came as a great surprise to viewers when the BBC network successfully refurbished the classic deductive detective with their series “Sherlock”.

Co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss developed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s traditional Sherlock Holmes as a “highly functioning sociopath” with the same extensive intelligence, but in a present day setting. In theory, it may appear to mirror other common detective shows, but the ingenious screenplay and acting make the mini-series brilliant.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman tackle the roles of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively. Additionally, the two acted alongside each other in The Hobbit films, Cumberbatch as Smaug and Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, which contributes to their on-screen chemistry.

The TV series offers a fresh perspective on modern London through Sherlock’s cases and inferences. Without giving any spoilers, the writers have mapped out a perfectly suspenseful plot, with plenty of twists and cliffhangers. Each episode is around 90 minutes long, with three episodes per season. However, despite the increasing popularity of the mini-series, season four’s air date has yet to be determined, as actors and writers have other commitments.

The longest wait between seasons has been around two years and Steven Moffat believes this delay could be even longer.

But don’t despair! There are 810 minutes of “Sherlock” already available on Netflix and Hulu. If you’re sick some weekend or just in a need of a break, “Sherlock” is the show in which to immerse yourself.
