As the 2013-2014 academic year begins to wind down, the Loy Norrix National English Honor Society prepares to present two major literary projects to the school and community. On April 16th, the society inducted 20 new members during a short ceremony in Loy Norrix’s Kasdorf Auditorium.
Brianna English, English teacher at Loy Norrix said, “NEHS’ main goals for this year are to have a successful literary magazine and poetry slam.”
The society, which gained 20 new members this year, has contributed many hours to the planning and finalizing of the poetry slam and the literary magazine. The poetry slam and magazine received many submissions. Senior Lian Wardrop has been the president of the society since the end of last year. She feels that the group has developed well.
“The society has grown a lot since the beginning. We are still growing though. It has been hard because we don’t have any traditions,” Wardrop said.
The officers and members have had to think of projects for the society to nurture and cultivate. The Loy Norrix chapter is the first in Michigan. So far, the literary magazine and poetry slam, which were ideas last year, have been enacted this year.
Wardrop said, “I am happy if they decide to keep them and I am happy if they try new things.”
Junior Katherine Morris, a returning member of NEHS, has enjoyed her second year as part of the society. Due to how young the society is, new members can be part of the process of creating projects and fundraiser ideas for future years.
Morris said, “I like it. It’s fun. It’s a great group of people. This year we have actual projects which I think is pretty cool.”
At the ceremony, each inductee was given a flower and was asked to sign the chapter log to be recognized as an official member of the society. The society is made up of students from all grade levels.
Junior Hannah Meyers said she joined the National English Honor Society to help improve literacy in the school. Of the induction ceremony, Meyers said, “Short, quick, to the point. I liked it.”
