Loy Norrix Senior to Continue Education at Ivy League School

Senior Mary Farner is accepted to Yale University for the 2012 fall semester.

“I was shocked and I was just kind of jumping around with my mom,” said senior Mary Farner. Farner was accepted to Yale University for fall 2012. Along with her four year attendance at Loy Norrix, Farner is a student of the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center, where she spends half of her school day. Farner has taken honors classes every year and will have completed five AP exams by high school graduation. She is the current president of National Honor Society and an all-state golfer as well.

It is no wonder that Farner has been accepted to the University of Michigan, Kalamazoo College, and Michigan Technological University in addition to Yale. Just last year, over 27 thousand students applied to Yale and of these only 1,351 were enrolled for the following fall semester. Ninety-seven percent of these students were positioned in the top ten percent of their high school class rank.

Many teachers and peers recognize that Farner works persistently to achieve her success.

Senior Brenden Groggel believes Farner will be very successful in her future. “She seems to be a teachable student. She’s respectful to all other students and doesn’t act better than them,” said Groggel.

“I think she’s very focused and driven. She knows what she wants and is willing to do whatever it takes to get there,” said social studies teacher and National Honor Society advisor Art Williams.

Farner is incredibly organized, which keeps her on track in her academics. She has a set schedule of doing homework right after school and dedicating one day of her weekend to school studies. Farner likes to cook and exercise during some of her spare time. Farner keeps her days running smoothly, but she even has some struggles, including “keeping myself from getting stressed out,” Farner said.

Farner is set on attending Yale University next fall. Several people wish her luck on her future in college.

“I hope she finds happiness and while she’s working hard to remember to share her life with others,” said Williams.

“I’m really excited,” said Farner.
