Exam week can be the most stressful week in the trimester and it’s quickly approaching. Not only do exams decide your final grade, but they can determine if you pass the class or not by counting 20 percent towards your grade at the end of the trimester. Teachers pass out review packets so that students know what to study, usually a combination of everything that you’ve learned over the trimester.

Senior Giovani Diaz is one of the many students affected by the stress of exams. After exams, he feels relieved but sometimes a bit nervous to see how he did on them. This is normal. Most students check their grades frequently to see when teachers put their final grades in.

In language classes such as French and Spanish there are oral exams with the teacher. Most teachers prepare students by having them do a modified version of “speed dating.” The class gets into a circle and goes around to each student, practicing having a conversation with them. It can also be helpful to practice with parents and peers who you feel comfortable around.

“I’ve had an oral exam but it wasn’t really a challenge for me because I usually practice speaking with my parents when I need to,” said Diaz.

According to Go Conqr, there are 10 easy ways to defeat the stress of exams. Doing some of these suggested activities will help relieve stress and study effectively so that you  get a passing grade.

1. Listen to music

It helps create a positive and productive environment by elevating your mood.

2. Take a quick walk

It can boost your memory and brain power.

3. Plan your study routine

Understand your learning process so you can become more productive.

4. Play with bubble wrap or animals

It can help relieve stress and anxiety.

5. Get enough sleep

It helps assimilate new knowledge into your long term memory.

6. Use mobile apps

There are tons of studying apps to help improve your daily life.

7. Give your mind space

Meditation is one of the most effective ways to take a break from stress.

8. Eat chocolate and sweets

Cocoa fights the stress hormone and has an overall relaxing effect.

9. Let it all out

Speaking to a family member or friend can highlight the bigger picture to empower you to rise above the exam stress.

10. Break free from distractions

Avoid checking Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. It can add up to a big waste of time.

Students have their own ways of studying and doing what they need to do to reduce stress during exam week.

“I don’t make plans for a few days to really focus on going over old assignments and to focus at home,” explained Diaz.

From the moment that a student walks into a new  class to the day of the final exam, any of the information that they have learned can be on the test. Going over old assignments and tests can really help to review the information that you’ve learned weeks ago and may not remember. Some teachers will warn students when something they’re learning will be on the exam so students can put a star or mark on their old assignments. That way when they go back they know what to memorize.

The most important thing to do is to remember to relax and figure out what works for you. If you don’t know what’s going to be on the exam then talk to your teacher and get their advice on what to study. If you don’t know what works for you then try a little bit of everything. Always take little breaks and remember to get a good night of sleep and eat a nutritional breakfast.
