Loy Norrix PeaceJam: more members and more peace

By Lucas Leibold

Loy Norrix PeaceJam has been hosting events for the betterment of our school and community since 2003. The Loy Norrix chapter of  PeaceJam is sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation and gives students an opportunity to meet Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. Over the years, PeaceJam has gained many members; Thursday’s count totaled 72 students.

Next Thursday and Friday, PeaceJam will be hosting Cupcakes for Cancer, where cupcakes will be sold in all three lunches and the proceeds will be donated to cancer research.

October 1st is Livestrong Day, and PeaceJam will also be holding the Beanie Babies and Coins for Cancer event.

Upcoming events are the Pumpkin Painting Party, the annual Spaghetti Dinner for the Homeless, and the Winter Wear Drive that begins October 30th.

Peace Jam is run by teacher Sveri May, whose father was actually eligible for a scientific Nobel Prize. This stresses her strong bond to the program. According to May, she has developed the Loy Norrix chapter PeaceJam program into one of the biggest and most active groups in the Great Lakes area.

Peace Jam meetings are before school in science teacher Claudia Witts’ room, C-19 at 7:00 A.M. on Thursdays. Anybody can join PeaceJam as long as they have a motivation to go out of their way to help others and promote peace.
