Days to Commemorate and Celebrate in May

This year, May is filled with major events. For the boxing fans, the fight they all have been waiting for is finally going to happen, Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao happens on May 5.

May 5 is also Cinco de Mayo. Many people don’t even know what this day is about. Mexico’s army defeated France at the Battle of Peubla during the Franco-Mexican war which lasted from 1861 to 1867. It’s a really big holiday in Mexico celebrated with food, dancing, parades and other traditions. Throughout the years, Norrix has put on a Cinco de Mayo dance in the cafeteria filled with music, fun, and food. This year it will take place today and costs only $2 or bring a dish to pass. The dance is from 5 to 10 p.m.

May 13 is Mothers’ Day. This is a very happy day for most people, but for others it’s just a reminder that their mom has passed. Celebrate the moments you have with your mom and tell her you love her. Some people aren’t so fortunate.

May 19th is Armed Forces day. This is a day that people celebrate to thank the Armed Forces for serving our country and keeping us safe. There are many ways people celebrate, including motorcycle rides, military displays, educational activities and parades.

May 27 is the Pentecost. The Pentecost is a day mainly for Pentecostals and Charismatic Christians to celebrate what the disciples achieved after the Holy Ghost appeared.

May 28 is Memorial Day. This is a day for commemorating men and women who died serving in the military. Most people visit cemeteries and memorials to remember their passed loved ones and pay respect to the fallen soldiers. Most people don’t work this day. This is a day to remember all the people who have died for this country during their service.

Life is a celebration. Treat each day like it is.
