Cross country is not the most popular sport. In 2021, the Loy Norrix cross country team consisted of 20 boys and 21 girls, adding up to a total of 41 runners. In 2025, the sport had a drastic increase in popularity, with the total number of runners rising to 64. The increase has not only enhanced the team’s competitive edge, but it’s also created a stronger sense of community. Practices and meets are now characterized by greater energy and enthusiasm throughout the team.
¨I think COVID definitely spurred some interest in running and getting out and doing more things,¨ said head coach Bradley Schmidt.
Following the pandemic, many students sought opportunities that were outside to allow them to reconnect with people face-to-face. Cross country provided the perfect outlet. It offered time outdoors, the chance to stay active, and an easy way to spend time with friends while finding a sense of normalcy.
“I think it became more popular because it’s good conditioning for other sports and good group exercise if you just want to chat,” said junior runner Nadiya Travis.
Nadiya has been running for three years and enjoys cross country for both the workout and the friendships it builds. Like many runners, she appreciates how the sport helps her stay in shape while still having fun with teammates.
¨I feel like with the [size] increase of the team, everyone lifts each other up and puts everything into the workouts.¨ said sophomore runner Tyler Severino.
The increase of runners has brought a new kind of energy to the team and a new motivation to be great. Everyone pushes themselves in workouts and keeps a strong ‘no one left behind’ mentality.
¨My first two years, I didn’t like it because I was slow and fat, ¨ said Severino. ¨Cross country has put me in the best shape of my life.¨
Severino struggled during his middle school cross country seasons, but now, after years of training, Severino has become a much stronger and faster runner.
The recent increase in popularity of cross country reflects how more students are finding value in the sport, whether for fitness, training for other athletics, or simply enjoying time with friends. What was once a smaller team has quickly become one of the school’s fastest-growing activities.
