As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, the anxious seniors of Loy Norrix are overly aware of what lies ahead, graduation. However, before the graduation ceremony is the traditional Candlelight Ceremony on May 31, 2013. This ceremony is very important in the eyes of many students.
“It’s the transition of going from a senior to a [college] freshman, and a junior to a senior,” said senior Brianna Leip. “I think it’s important to have a ceremony for that transition.”
For some, it is more than just a transitioning period. “I think it’s a nice experience and a chance to reminisce on the last four years,” said senior Jovaughn Carver.
Candlelight begins with a senior walking into the auditorium with the corresponding junior. Leip has decided walk with a fellow junior, Jared Graves.
“I think it’s cool that we get to choose [our junior] and they aren’t just given to us,” said Leip.
After the entrance and announcement of the senior, each takes their seats, juniors on one side and seniors on the other. Throughout the ceremony, there are various traditions including awards, a slideshow, and the actual passing of the torch.
“I’m excited because I want to see the senior slideshow and I’m looking forward to the awards,” said Carver.
The Loy Norrix seniors are very excited as Candlelight marks a very important time in their senior year. To celebrate all the successes and hard work, the senior class advisors, Alison Nelson and Sveri May, put on a senior luncheon after the ceremony.
“I’m excited for the lunch and the whole ceremony in general because it’s all about us,” said Leip. “It’s the next step to the moment we’ve all been waiting for.”
