“Technically I came out kickin,” Amelia Leibold said when how long she has been playing soccer. She started really playing at age six, and now she is committed to play for the Golden Grizzlies at Oakland University.
Before finally making her decision, Leibold had to decide from different universities and colleges. Besides Oakland, she was deciding between Alma, Adrian, Olivet, Western Michigan University and many other schools she was unable to list.
“It’s a good fit for me. The first time I went on campus I just knew. The environment and the fields were great for me,” Leibold said.
Leibold’s best friend Erin Romph has been supportive of Leibold’s decision the whole time. She has been there for her during all the deciding factors and was there when Leibold finally decided.
“The way Mia talked, I could have sworn she was already decided on Alma, but after her visit to Oakland, I could tell she had a change of heart,” Romph said.
Leibold always knew she wanted to go to school and play soccer wherever she went. Now that she has signed with Oakland it has become a reality to her. She will not get a starting spot next year with the Grizzlies, but she will be on the team, which is most important.
“I really just want to make a name for myself. I won’t start, but I get to work hard and move myself up to a starting spot. I think that’s the main reason I chose Oakland,” Leibold said.
When Leibold received her first letter she got really excited about it, but as the process progressed it made her nervous and stressed.
“It’s good to remain proactive during the recruiting process and this may sound bad,” Leibold said, “but you have to put yourself first in this decision. Don’t let others influence your choice.”
