Go goose: Forensics Team takes flight to Mackinac Island’s tournament

On Friday, May 17, the Forensics Team piled onto the Mackinac ferry and said goodbye to the mainland. The fancy Grand Hotel, fudge and a forensics competition awaited them.
Team members spent the weeks leading up to the tournament practicing competitive acting and public speaking pieces that usually span 6-10 minutes.
“My piece was ‘Twilight: New Moon,”’ said junior Catie Frink. “It’s a fantastically terrible movie and Mackinac is all about having fun, so we got to be super over-the-top.”
Although no team members made it to finals, they got to enjoy performing in unique categories on Saturday like “TikTok Impromptu” or “Poetry Slam,” and stayed in a historic hotel known for its antique decorations which have been featured in old films. Five seniors also spent the weekend judging during rounds of a variety of events, writing critiques and ranking the competitors on their performance.
“It’s fun for some students to see the other side of the table,” coach Dan Lafferty said. “It would be my hope that they would enjoy that and maybe use it as a potential way to stay involved in forensics throughout their own future.”
On the last day of their final tournament, seniors were presented with cords for their forensics work, and the team spent their final hours basking in the warm weather.
