On Sept. 20, 2024, Future released his album, “Mixtape Pluto,” making it his 17th album ever and his first drop since “We Don’t Trust You,” which was released on March 22, 2024. The 17-song album features about 45 minutes of the classic unique sounds from Future’s deep mumble technique, paired with some of his great auto-tuned melodies. It also showcases a different style of collaboration beats with multiple producers from Atlanta, including Southside and Wheezy, ATL Jacob, and more.
Although the album wasn’t as good as past Future classics, like “Ds2″ or “Monster,” it still gives listeners something new to listen to. According to Billboard, every song on the album entered the Hot 100 at least once since its release.
The mixtape starts very strong at the beginning, with several of the first songs being the best. Future explores his talent with creative freestyling, matched with some of his different beats and samples. With that being said, here are my top five, ranked songs from “Mixtape Pluto.”
5. Plutoski
“Plutoski” reflects the duality of rapper Future’s life. The way the song is structured with the laid back instrumentals lets Future rap confidently and reflectively as he explores the balance of fame, credibility and wealth. It’s more of an experimental song with new rap flow techniques and beats, and it isn’t as renowned as his classic loud trap style. It allows Future to showcase his rap and rhyme ability, with lyrics like “Six in the mornin’ again / Hoggin’ the road in the Benz / I’m on my way to the tail / She tanglin’ up with her friend,” while adding his mumble technique and highlighting key moments that represent his lifestyle. Overall, not a terrible song considering Future is trying different things, but it’s not as good as his signature trap style.
4. Lil Demon
The title “Lil Demon” implies Future exploring the influence that women have had on his life and the effect of darker aspects of his lifestyle, including life on the streets, wealth and loyalty on his life and relationships.
Future’s hardcore lyrics and rap style in this song helps reflect the song’s theme about his rise from poverty to wealth.
He incorporates lyrics like, “Yeah, I’m trappin’, Yeah, I get money, I’m havin’,” and, “Came up with the roaches.”
He also references classic gang culture with lyrics like, “Go raidin’ at the church (shit I’m seein’) / You movin’ wrong, we clutchin’ (that’s gang),” referring to the endless hunt for money with his gang.
This song’s beat is really catchy and would be higher up for me if the lyrics weren’t so repetitive.
3. Ski
“Ski” follows the same gangster theme other songs explore while emphasizing the pursuit of power. The hook in the song, “I’m ready to slide, ski, ski,” implies his willingness to jump into action, which highlights his fast-paced, quick decision making and dangerous lifestyle. Although this song repeats similar themes already mentioned in previous songs, it does so in a more energetic and rhythmic way than other songs ranked below it.
2. Lost My Dog
“Lost My Dog” is undoubtedly the most heartfelt song on the album. In the song, Future expresses grief over losing his friend to a fentanyl overdose. Future also opens up about losing loved ones to gang violence and living in a violent neighborhood.
The low bass tempo and high-pitched vocals are the best features of the song. The sampling of “How Love’s Made,” by Jaime Woods, allows Future to focus on the storytelling aspect of the song.
Overall, this song’s message plus the sampling create a distinctive calm melody for future to truly vent some of his feelings, putting it over the other songs.
1. Teflon Don
“Teflon Don” is the most streamed song of the mixtape, and for good reason. The song features a fast tempo that allows Future to rap quickly. With relentless repetition in the chorus paired with shifting vocals, Future raps about a crime-ridden rise from his past street life. He does this while referencing his current lavish lifestyle and comparing himself to legendary gangster John Gotti: “Beat the first case like John Gotti, whoa.”
I think this is the best song on the album because, in a sense, he is marking it as a return to the top of the music industry with the drop of the album, especially with it being the first song on the album.
Overall, the mixtape is a fun new piece of music to listen to for Future fans and rap music fans alike.
