Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s 2025.
Hosting a Winterfest isn’t new to Loy Norrix, however, this year things are being done a little differently. This year, freshman class advisor teacher Hector Dominguez, along with the class of 2028 executive board and class of 2027 executive board, came together to plan this year’s Winterfest.
The theme of the dance is Winter Fresh. It’s not a formal dance, but whoever comes best dressed has the opportunity to win a free pair of Jordans.
“The theme is gonna be ‘winter fresh,’” said Dominguez. “We’re going to have a contest, whoever comes dressed the freshest to the dance, wins a pair of Jordans. So I’m gonna give you a gift card, and you just pick whichever pair you want.”
Besides the contest, Winterfest will have other forms of entertainment, such as catering from San Francisco Neveria & Paleteria, live performances from , a photo booth and, of course, DJ Mar.
A big focus for this year’s Winterfest is to make things exciting for students. The class of 2028 executive board is very involved in getting opinions and recommendations for the dance from their classmates.
“I think Mr. Dominguez and his executive board have done a really good job of catering towards what the students want to see, and what they have expressed about what they would like to see at the dances,” said sophomore class president Brielle Dalke.
One of the reasons the class of 2028 are working so hard to put together an exciting 2025 Winterfest is because of their disappointment in previous dances.
“At homecoming, it was a little boring, and I noticed that people didn’t have fun at previous dances,” said freshman [title] Kalice Slaughter. “We’re trying to make the dance more fun with performers and artists, and we’re gonna have a photoshoot booth, so you can take pictures and stuff.”
Board members from the class of 2027 are also serving an important role in organizing the fest.
“I got involved because I’m the sophomore class president, and Mr. Dominguez actually reached out to me and asked me if I could speak at their first meeting,” said Dalke. “I kind of took on the role as co-advisor, and I’ve been mentoring the class of 2028.”
Planning for a school dance can be complicated, but Dominguez seems to have things under control.
“Mr. Dominguez has contact with the DJs [and performers] from Chicago, and he went to San Francisco and talked to the owner to confirm catering for the dance,” said sophomore Vice President Dennise Hernandez.
Overall, students can expect a well planned dance with a lot of events.
“Mr. Dominguez knows how to throw a party, and I think people should expect a lot because he is throwing a big party,” Hernandez continued. “He’s trying to make it as best as he can, as well as the executive board of 2028.”
Winterfest is on Friday, January 31, 2025 at 9 p.m. at Loy Norrix. Tickets are sold at all 3 lunches, in the cafeteria and at the door Friday night. Each ticket is $10.
