Our Black History Month person of the day is George Washington Carver.
George Washington Carver was an American agricultural scientist and inventor who promoted alternative crops to cotton and methods to prevent soil depletion. He was one of the most prominent black scientists of the early 20th century. In all, he developed 300 products from peanuts and 118 from sweet potatoes, in addition to new products from waste materials including recycled oil, and paints and stains from clay. Carver is best known for his research into alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts, soybeans, and sweet potatoes.
