Vacancies at lunch tables – happening now.
Effective as of Wednesday, September 15, 2010, Loy Norrix High School has reverted back to three lunch periods. First (A) lunch will last 30 minutes from 10:01 to 10:31, second (B) lunch will last 25 minutes from 10:40 to 11:05, and third (C) lunch will last 30 minutes from 11:18 to 11:48.
Changing to the two lunch schedule from the three lunch schedule of prior years was an attempt to eliminate split classes, which is a class that is interrupted halfway through for a lunch break. The lunch committee thought that offering some other places for students to go during lunch would help with the issue of overcrowding.
“Basically we attempted to give students more options with the senior courtyard and the library,” said Principal Johnny Edwards, “It took a while for students to take advantage of these options.”
Principal Edwards realized that the senior courtyard and the library didn’t create a solution for the students who weren’t able to eat.
“Switching back to three lunches was basically the only option,” said Edwards.
The switch to three lunches has created some frustration because it forces the 3rd period class to be broken up in some classrooms.
“I think it’s a great idea to eliminate the crowding in the lunchroom,” said World History teacher Matt McCullough, “The only frustration is that with the added passing time, it gives students less time to stay on task with their learning.”
The number of students in the cafeteria for each lunch is drastically reduced and more students are able to get through the lunch line and have time to eat before returning to class.
In terms of overcrowding: case closed.
