Knights men’s basketball gets close victory on “Senior Knight”

After the resounding victory by the Lady Knights against Union City, it was time for the men’s basketball team to take on state championship runner-ups, Tri-Unity Christian from Wyoming, Michigan. This turned out to be the most difficult matchup the Knights would have this season and was a must-watch game.

First Quarter:

  • The Knights started the game with a quick 3 to 0 lead after a two-pointer by senior forward Kevin Lucas and free throw from senior guard Kobe Sackett.
  • The beginning of the game was very fast paced but low scoring as Unity took a 5 to 3 lead.
  • With a minute left in the first quarter, junior forward James Rocco nailed a three-pointer in the corner. On the Knights’ very next possession, junior Tom Clark hit a three as well in the opposite corner giving the Knights a 12 to 11 lead.
  • Junior Jaydon Ruiz closed the first quarter out a layup with 3 seconds left.
  • At the end of the first quarter the Knights led 16 to 13.

Second Quarter:

  • Tri-Unity started the second quarter with a 2 point jump shot that made it a 1 point lead for Loy Norrix, but Sackett answered back with a three-pointer making it a 4 point lead for the Knights. 
  • Unity would make a comeback and take a 24 to 19 against the Knights with 5 minutes left in the 2nd.
  • With 3 minutes left in the second quarter Tri-Unity led 27-24.
  • The Knights tied the game up at 27, but with 2 minutes left Sackett knocked down a deep three, giving the Knights a three point lead.
  • Tri-Unity would take the lead right back before halftime. However, Unity led 33 to 32.

Third Quarter:

  • The whole of the third quarter was very intense. Both teams’ defense was locked down.
  • With 5 minutes to go in the third quarter, the game was tied at 40.  
  • With 2 minutes remaining the score was tied at 44.
  • Neither team refused to let the other team get any momentum. At the end of the third quarter the game was tied at 48.

Fourth Quarter:

  • Sackett started the fourth quarter with a three-pointer.
  • With 7 minutes left, sophomore guard Cedric Huntley scored an and-1 play, but Tri-Unity immediately responded with a quick score. The Knights led 54-51 with 6 minutes left.
  • Coming off a Tri-Unity timeout, the Knights came out hot and took a 61 to 56 lead with 4 minutes left.
  • With 1:35 left in the game, Huntley hit a crucial three-pointer to seal the game.
  • The Knights would go on to hold off Tri-Unity for the rest of the game, winning 72-68
  • Leading Scorers:
    Cedric Huntley had 21 points.
    Tyler Roberts had 12.
    Kobe Sackett had 10.

This game was close all the way through and had people glued to their seats. It was a very successful senior night for Loy Norrix as both the Lady Knights and Men’s Knights picked up huge victories.
