Seniors win first place in Michigan State Forensics Invitational
March 9, 2022
The Loy Norrix trophy cases are loaded, but soon another will be added following the Forensic team’s win on the Saturday of Feb. 19.
Loy Norrix seniors Liam Braun and Elias Nagel-Bennett competed in the Forensics Spartan Invitational at Michigan State and both won first place in their events. Elias competed in the Impromptu event and Liam competed in Broadcasting. Their good scores from the judges led to an overall first place for Loy Norrix at the Spartan Invitational.
Nagel-Bennett has participated in forensics for three years and described it as “competitive speech and acting at the high school or college level. It’s split up into multiple events.”
Nagel-Bennett’s impromptu event involved preparing a speech in response to a quotation, an anecdote, or an object and being timed while doing it, which is called limited preparation.
Braun was also involved in a limited prep event. “I’m in the broadcasting event and it’s limited prep, so that means I’m doing everything the day of in the rounds,” Braun continued. “Friday night I prepped a bunch of news stories and then the day of, I was given an editorial and fifteen minutes to write my opinion on it.”
In the past, Braun hasn’t always done limited prep. “I did a different event, Multiple, my freshman and sophomore year, and then last year I made the switch to broadcasting.”
Nagel-Bennett encouraged anyone who is interested, to try forensics, and “If you love acting or public speaking Forensics is the club for that.”
