As students walk the halls on their way to their classes, theyre reminded that there are staff who are safe to tell. If they are experiencing abuse, harassment, mental health declines or other struggles, they can reach out to the teachers who have these teal ribbons displayed in their classrooms.

Peace Jam students ring bells to raise money for the less fortunate. Every year the Salvation Army works together with the community to help out those in need.

On December 8, 2012 Loy Norrix High School Peace Jam members volunteered for the Salvation Army bell ringing project at Macy’s outside Crossroads mall. Sveri May, Peace Jam Adviser, has been volunteering for the Salvation Army bell ringing for 20 years. Peace jam students have taken part for the last 10 years. Before Peace Jam, any LN student was able to come and be a part of this experience. In 2011, Loy Norrix students raised the most money for the Salvation Army.
“One of my favorite parts is bringing Santa hats and hot chocolate for the kids so they can have fun while making a difference,” said May.
May was interested in the project because she enjoys helping people less fortunate in Kalamazoo. It gives her and her students the opportunity to give back to the community through the Salvation Army.
“When people see a group of Loy Norrix students volunteering, it shows the community us as a school family and the things we do for are community,” said May.
Loy Norrix student junior Armani Garrison volunteered on Saturday to help out the community and get a few extra volunteer hours to add to her resume.
“It’s fun and good for the community,” said Garrison when she was asked how she felt about the project.
Garrison wanted to be a part of the Salvation Army bell ringing because she enjoys helping out her community and giving a little of her time to help others.
