LN Beats St. Joseph in a Penalty Shootout 4-3

On Wednesday May 13, the LN women’s soccer team traveled to St. Joe to take on the Bears. LN played a long hard game after going down a goal a few minutes into the first half. LN got a few chances to convert but were unsuccessful.
On Monday May 18, the LN Women’s soccer team took on St. Joe for the second time but for the district tournament. The team put up a tough fight, and when the regulation 80 minutes ended, the score was tied.
Overtime during district tournaments lasts for 20 minutes, or until a goal, called the golden goal, is scored. If neither team is able to score, then each team picks five players to take penalty kicks (PKs). PKs ultimately decided the rematch against St. Joe.
Two years ago, in the district tournament, LN took on St. Joe, which also resulted in a time, except that each team was able to convert two goals during that game. During the game two years ago, it was decided on a 3-2 penalty shootout that went in LN’s favor.
In this year’s penalty shootout, the shooters in order were juniors Grace Labadie, Kate Puca, and Jane Labadie, senior Czoey Hohler, and junior Julie Zabik. Grace Labadie took a PK against St. Joe two years ago as well. Four of the five shots went in for LN. Grace Labadie’s goal was saved by the St. Joe keeper.
Senior goalkeeper Lauren Dougherty saved the day for LN. St. Joe was only able to convert three of their five shots. Their first shooter put the ball wide. The next three put theirs in. St. Joe’s last shooter had the opportunity to tie the PKs, but Dougherty saved the ball and won the PKs and the game.
LN was able to avenge their previous loss. If you missed the game, you missed a thrilling end.
