Imagine yourself invested in your screen over a new game you’ve just bought, making calculated clicks on your keyboard to jump over obstacles and spikes in front of you.
The game being Geometry Dash. Geometry Dash is a popular game available on mobile devices as well as PCs and consoles, in which the player must click or tap their mouse or screen to jump over and avoid different obstacles. The game utilises this simple concept and constantly pushes the human limit in rhythm. There are endless levels and challenges that each feature tight ship flying, wave gameplay, and frame-perfect jumps. The popular game has been around for over a decade, and despite its longevity, it continues to gain popularity.
“I’ve seen people on TikTok live play it,” said sophomore Carter Jager. “It’s fun, it can be aggravating, but it’s a cool game.”
Geometry Dash features nine different game modes: Cube, Ship, Ball, UFO, Wave, Spider, Swingcopter, and a platformer mode. Platformer mode makes a level play like a platformer game, in which the game focuses on navigating obstacles, completing puzzles, and defeating enemies to reach a goal at the player’s own pace. This utilises the jetpack feature.
Jager, like many other players, finds the game to be rage-inducing due to the constant deaths and the struggle of learning different game modes. However, many players have climbed over these hills and found themselves addicted to the game. Its popularity is in part due to its community-run aspect, where players can upload their own levels and creations, making the game never-ending with new levels being added daily.
“It’s my favorite game, I can’t stop playing it,” said sophomore Caleb Calussen. “I started playing last year, and I’ll just sit in my bed and play it for hours. It’s just the best ever. I never run out of levels to play, and my hardest [level] is ‘Bloodbath’.”
Geometry Dash also features difficulty ratings, with the easiest ones being rated ‘Easy’, and some of the hardest levels in the game being rated ‘Extreme Demon’. ‘Bloodbath’ is one of the ‘Extreme Demon’ levels, and beating levels of such difficulty often makes players feel confident and accomplished, especially after spending large amounts of time on these levels. With new levels of varying difficulty being created every day, the possibility of accomplishment is never-ending.
“Beating ‘Stereo Extremeness’ was definitely my biggest accomplishment in Geometry Dash,” said sophomore Josh Von Eitzen. “It definitely might be my biggest accomplishment in life, actually.”
While some players are more trained and skilled than others at the game, it is catered to players of all levels, with endless gameplay and challenges waiting to be conquered.
“Even though Geometry Dash is really hard, I think the challenge is worth it,” said sophomore Elliott Marcial. “It’s my favorite game in the whole world, thank you so much, Geometry Dash creators, for making such a great game.”
