The Cybersecurity club will be meeting today, Oct 8th in M1 after school. Everyone is still welcome so stop by and see what our Loy Norrix Cyberpatriots are up to. We still have room on our rosters for additional members. Attention students: Today there will be a Hispanic Heritage celebration in the cafeteria afterschool. Candy will be sold during all 3 lunches to help fund this event. Students will get a ticket to the celebration when you purchase candy. Hope to see you there. Attention Junior and Senior Women The Powder Puff Football game is on for Thursday October 14th. You must sign up to play with Ms. Van Lieu in A-12 or Mrs. Fires in D-12. You may not show up to play without attending both practices which will be Monday October 11th at 5:30pm and Tuesday October 12th at 5:30pm. Practices are on the back field behind the tennis courts. Football players are the coaches. The game is at 5:30 pm on the football field on Thursday October 14th. Junior women are to pickup a red shirt and seniors a blue shirt from the main office supply of tee shirts. See Ms. Van Lieu for more details. If you are interested in playing baseball here at Norrix we have started weight training and conditioning on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5-7 in the weight room. Show up ready to work if you're interested. If you have questions you can stop by the athletic office and talk to Coach Rickli. It's the great pumpkin painting party, Loy Norrix! Tuesday, October 19th from 2:30-3:30, Loy Norrix will have its 31st annual Pumpkin Painting Party. Come to the cafeteria and paint a pumpkin! All pumpkins will be delivered to community agencies. Students and staff are all welcome to attend! Attention Seniors: Are you considering pursuing science, math or nursing in college? Do you have a natural inclination and curiosity for science? If yes, we invite you and your parent or guardian to join us to learn more about the Heyl Science Scholarship to study math or science at Kalamazoo College or nursing at the WMU Bronson School of Nursing. An informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 19th at 6pm at Kalamazoo College. Space is limited. Please register as soon as possible. Hispanic Heritage Month Person of the Day is: Julia de Burgos Julia was a Puerto Rican poet.As an advocate of Puerto Rican independence, she served as Secretary General of the Daughters of Freedom, the women's branch of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party. She was also a civil rights activist for women and African/Afro-Caribbean writers.

Hispanic Heritage Month Person of the Day is: Miriam Colon Miriam Colon was a Puerto Rican actress. Colón was the founder and director of the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater in New York City. Beginning her career in the early 1950s, Colón started performing on Broadway, later moving into television. Known for appearances on various television shows from the 1960s through the 2010s, including Sanford and Son where she played Carlota Fuentes, the sister of Julio Fuentes. She is perhaps best known for her role as Mama Montana in the 1983 crime film Scarface. In 2014, Colón received the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama.

Happy Banned Books Week! This week we celebrate our freedom to read and think for ourselves. Book bans and censorship challenges are happening in schools and libraries across the country. Writer Laurie Halse Anderson says "Censorship has nothing to do with protecting children. It has to do with protecting adults who don't want to have difficult conversations with those children." Celebrate Banned Books Week by checking out a banned or censored book from the library today, and learn more on instagram @LNLibrary Chess Club is today from 2:20 to 3:30 in Computer Lab D10. Anybody may attend, and anyone who beats Mr. Bellware wins a customized chess board. The Travel Club is enrolling students and adults for travel in Summer 2022. Attention students the Philosophy Club will meet today, Tuesday in room B-17. We will talk about good cyber hygiene as well as prepare for the national cybersecurity competition Cyberpatriot. Registration for the competition ends Sept 30th so don't delay. We have practice systems that need to be secured! Feel free to stop M1 to learn more. Your Loy Norrix High School Marching Knights traveled to the Otsego Marching Band Competition this past Saturday. They placed 2nd in Class A, one of the highest placements they've achieved, and a great start to our first competition season in 2 years! They also beat cross-town rivals the Kalamazoo Central Marching Giants! Great job to our Loy Norrix Band! Happy Banned Books Week! This week we celebrate our freedom to read and think for ourselves.
