On the afternoon of January 6, 2021, the capital went under attack after the results of the 2021 election.  On the same day, Mike Pence was set to approve Biden’s victory in Congress. “Jan. 6 Insurrection: The Washington Post’s investigation of the causes, cost and aftermath” discusses how thousands of Trump supporters from all over the nation went to the Capitol building and demanded to be let in. The heavily armed mob damaged the Capitol and pushed past the Capitol police officers in an attempt to reach Congress and Vice President Mike Pence, who were a much smaller group than the rioters. 

 Due to riots at the capitol the next day, Mike Pence announced the victory of Joe Biden leading him to become the next United States President. 

After the riot and conducting a thorough investigation Insider reported how about 818 people have been charged in the Capitol insurrection so far. This riot is one of the most reported crimes in U.S. history with charges reported in one day. Within the last year, the number of people charged in the insurrection has grown through tips from the public who have used social media and phone locations.

At this point according to NPR, author of “Where the Jan. 6th insurrection investigation stands, one year later.” “More than 727 people have been arrested in connection with the Capitol riot, and at least 165 of them pleaded guilty – 145 of misdemeanors and the rest of felonies.” 

Now, over 600 defendants have been charged with entering or restricting in a restricted or federal building or grounds. As stated in the article, “What was Trump’s role during the capitol riot? The House plans to find out,” says that Trump’s supporters pointed out that Trump, during the January 6, 2021 speech at the rally, told the crowd, “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” But members of the crowd wore goggles, camouflage, Army-style helmets, and tactical gear. 

Currently, Congress is investigating the events of January 6, 2021, till now. Within the last year, Congress has built a strong case against the rioters of the Capitol. The Select Committee has worked to gain over 30 thousand records and has been conducting interviews to add to the previous 300. 

Mike Pence has been seen as a key witness in the investigation due to him being the main target for this riot. The latest news from  Jan6house.gov: reports, “A select committee will be requesting information from Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy but as of Wednesday, January 13th, he has refused to testify before the January 6th panel. 

Donald Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani has also been subpoenaed by this special committee.
