2016 Presidential Candidate Donald Trump is one person that people love to hate. His outlandish views and comments about everything from immigration to terrorism have sparked a lot of loathing over the last six months. Here are some of the things that Donald Trump said.
Terrorism
Trump said to Russell Berman shortly after the ISIS attack in Paris that, “I want a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”
This isn’t completely insane. When we are at war with another country, we do not allow our citizens to travel into that country, or their citizens to travel into our country. Now, I know that we are not at war with all Muslims; however, something more should be done about ISIS. Since there is a huge threat that an ISIS member could just board a plane and enter our country, we need to have more security to stop that. Unfortunately, we can not look at someone and just know that they are a member of ISIS. One thing that we do know is that all members of ISIS are Muslim.
There isn’t a better option. Even bombing other countries where we know where ISIS members are located wouldn’t take care of the problem. However, that isn’t really realistic and could possibly result in the taking of hundreds, thousands, millions, maybe even billions of lives.
Economic Policy and Unemployment
Trump is a very successful businessman. To start out his success in business, he asked his parents for a “small loan of one million dollars.” After he funded his business, Trump made millions, lost it all twice and then rebuilt stronger than ever.
That’s what we need in this country. We need to rebuild and come back stronger. Our country is currently $19 trillion dollars in debt. Though we have operated with this massive amount of debt for years, it would be far better if this wasn’t a concern. If we were at a point where we had a surplus of money, there would naturally be more money to spend on the things that we need to anyway, without putting ourselves more in debt. It is just common sense.
Trump said in his book, “Time to Get Tough,” “If we want jobs in America, we need to enact my 5-part tax policy: kill the death tax; lower the tax rates on capital gains and dividends; eliminate corporate taxes in order to create more American jobs; mandate a 15% tax for outsourcing jobs and a 20% tax for importing goods, and enact the 1-5-10-15 income tax plan [four brackets with a top rate of 15%].”
If we brought our jobs back from foreign countries, our national debt would go down significantly. By bringing the jobs here there will be more people paying taxes and more money will be in the government’s spending budget. The number of jobs that we are outsourcing (moving production to other countries where it is cheaper to make things) is increasing and it is getting out of hand. Since 2001, we have outsourced at least 3.2 million jobs. In 2015 alone, we outsourced over 2.3 million.
How Trump plans to bring jobs back from China is very simple. Impose stiff tariffs of up to 15 percent on all imported goods. This would make it more expensive for companies that manufacture products in other countries. The main attraction for companies to have jobs in foreign countries, is that the minimum wage is lower. Thus, it costs less to make the same thing because you don’t have to pay your workers as much as you would in the U.S.
All of this is not to say that Trump does not employ in other countries though. Trump does own hotels and real estate property in foreign countries. This is different from what Trump is talking about though. When Nike builds a factory in China, they are taking jobs away from American citizens because those are jobs that physically could be here. When Trump buys a hotel in China, that is property. That cannot be moved to America to make it so that more people can work the hotels.
Immigration Reform
“I will build a great wall – and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me- and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for the wall. Mark my words,” said Trump on Immigration policy.
A horrible idea? I don’t think so, there is a lot of merit to what he said. Trump has a solution to the problem. If there was a wall on the border of Mexico, you would physically not be able to come through and get into America. There still lies the problem of semi-trucks just driving illegal immigrants through in their trailers. My answer to that would be to increase security checks so that it becomes harder to get over the border that way.
If there is no way that illegal immigrants can just come into our country, our illegal immigration problem won’t necessarily go away completely, but it will definitely improve the problem.
Illegal immigration is a problem in our country. When there are illegal immigrants in our country, they usually don’t pay taxes because they are often paid under the table so that the government can not see that they are here. That takes money from the government that we could be spending on things like roads. There are nearly 11 million illegal immigrants.
Social Justice
Trump in his book, “The America we Deserve.” said this about social justice, “One of our next president’s most important goals must be to induce a greater tolerance for diversity. The senseless murder of Matthew Shepard in Wyoming, where an innocent boy was killed because of his sexual orientation turned my stomach. We must work towards an America where these kinds of hate crimes are unthinkable.”
Even though everyone wants to say that Trump is horrible and insensitive, Trump is sticking up for the LGBT community. Making all of the hasty accusations doesn’t make much sense because he shows a lot of tolerance in things that he says.
How can someone who is so tolerant of sexual orientation rights, be such a horrible person? Trump is focused on such a relevant topic and has a history of understanding and compassion for the topic. This is the president that we need right now. With gay marriage recently being legalized, we need someone who has openly discussed their positive feelings towards the subject.
Gun Control
“The gun-free zones are target practice for the sickos and for the mentally ill. They look for gun-free zones. The six soldiers that were killed. Two of them were among the most highly decorated, and they weren’t allowed on a military base to have guns. And somebody walked in and shot them, killed them. If they had guns, he wouldn’t be around very long. I can tell you, there wouldn’t have been much damage. I think gun-free zones are a catastrophe. They’re a feeding frenzy for sick people,” said Trump on gun policy.
A very good point. If more people had guns to protect themselves, there would likely be fewer innocent people murdered. Criminals are going to obtain guns whether it’s illegal to or not. If they want to kill someone, they will do it. They are criminals for a reason, if they want to break the law they are going to. So the rest of the people should have the tools to defend themselves.
All throughout our history, we have had the person everyone loves to hate. Whether it be Adolf Hitler, Ted Bundy or Osama Bin Laden. But what did all of those men have in common? They were responsible for the deaths of many people.
It seems as though Donald Trump is starting to become the person people love to hate, but the reasons just don’t add up. He has a lot of potentially good ideas for our country. I think that if people just give him a chance and look past his character, they will see that he can be a really great president. I think that if Americans should look more at what he wants to do at the core. Look at what he means by what he says then you will see that Trump is actually a very good choice for president.

Mrs. Pankop, how did you let this happen? I can’t express my disappointment for the actions of those involved in the publishment of this piece.
You’re better than this, KL.

This article is uninformed, factually inaccurate, culturally insensitive, and objectively wrong. Next time, perhaps have someone edit your article before you publish it. And if someone did edit it, have someone else edit it.

Is this an article or electoral propaganda?
Seriously, I think that this kind of things shouldn’t be on a high school newspaper.
If you want to talk about politics, please do it in an objective way and if you want to defend a candidate who promotes hate to other races, religions, social conditions and genders, a personal blog would be more appropiated than a scholar newspaper.

1. “Donald Trump is going to make America great again” That is Trump’s slogan! “Trump is actually a very good choice for president”. On these words you are encouraging people to vote him as a president. And you are doing that basing on a few facts that you found out about him. You didn’t tell all the bad things that he has proposed.
2. In my opinion, this kind of political stuff shouldn’t be treated on a school’s newspaper. A high school is a place to learn, where a lot of different students from different races and nacitonalities are sharing halls everyday. This guy is an insult to high school and its multicultural and social values. A man who treats women like objects and disrespect them shouldn’t be taken as an example to follow. He literally said that a woman MUST be hot in order to be a journalist. And he has more and more examples of his misogyny. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/18-real-things-donald-trump-has-said-about-women_us_55d356a8e4b07addcb442023)
He has called rapers and drug dealers to ALL the Mexicans. There are a lot of Latinos students in American high schools. Even on his own political party we can find critics against Trump’s ideas. He has accused ALL Muslims of being terrorists. How can this make sense for somebody? ISIS doesn’t represent Muslims. An entire religion cannot be blamed because of the acts of some psychopaths.
A man who disrespects people because of their gender, nacionality or religion doesn’t deserve to be defended on a high school newspaper, that should be a representation of high school’s values.
I don’t see the need of publishing an article like this on a scholar newspaper. And this doesn’t have nothing to do with his political party. As I said, even Republicans are going against this man. A person like him shouldn’t be taken as an example of a person with good ideas. High school should promote good values and this man is just the opposite.
3. This isn’t objective in any level. I understand that this is YOUR OPINION, An opinion is usually given in a subjective way. To give an opinion on an objective way you should give the possitive and negative facts. A global vision. Your article is just 5 ideas that Trump has came up with and which you think they are correct. But that doesn’t mean that everyone agree. When I read an objective article I assimilate the infomation given but when I read a subjective one I build an opinion about, for or against it. So, obviously, this isn’t an objective article. IT’S YOUR OPINION. And it’s perfectly fine if you think like that but remember that sometimes a high school newspaper can influence its readers and it should do it on a possitive way. Because some students may know about this man and will be able to build an opinion about your article, but there will also be people who are not updated on politics stuff and who will read this and have a wrong vision of this guy.

The Nation of Islam has written an open letter to ISIS stating why they are not Islamic (Muslim). That’s all I was able to ready because I felt like I would be correcting for hours.

The Nation of Islam isn’t exactly Muslim either. Malcolm X figured that out and we all know what happened to him when he became vocal about it.

This is extremely biased, and not factually correct. I think the Knight Life needs to stay out of covering controversial politics. Opinions should not make the news.

This article is disgusting in many ways. If a person like Donald Trump becomes president start packing and moving from your country because that will be a serious chaos. The thing that most annoys me about this article is the part about guns when there was recently a shooting in Kalamazoo. More guns? More guns equals more people dying. That people haven’t enought guns isn’t the problem, the problem is that there are too many guns and is so easy to get to them. C’mon, compare the people who die in the US because of a shooting between the people who die because of a shooting in countries with a more restrictive guns policy like France or Spain. Just saying that more people in the US have died because one of its citizens have a gun than because of terrorism. Donald Trump doesn’t want to make this country a safer place, is the opposite. He just wants to put the fear on our skins and solve violence with more violence.

A lot of criminals had past the mental testing to get a gun. That’s not an excuse. Guns should be definitely prohibited. Only the police and a few more exceptions for obvious reasons should be allowed to have a gun. But ok, keep defending “the right of owning a gun” while we see shootings on the news everyday.
