“We’re All Gonna Die!!!” …Not really Though. People Stress About Supposed End of The World

We’ve all heard the rumors that the world is going to end December 21st, 2012. Why do people believe the world will end on that specific day and why doe some think it is all made up?

Senior, Alexis Rumph said, “It’s dumb because the world never actually ends. People say the world is going to end like five times a year.”

It is believed the world is going to end based on the Mayan calendar. According to the International Business Time, “the Mayans had in no certain terms predicted the planet would explode or implode on December 21st, 2012. Rather, this is a time of transition from one World Age to another.”

There are many different theories on how the world will end, just to name a few; it will freeze over, it will flood completely, it will turn into a fireball allowing no one to live.

It is unclear if the Mayans created or adopted the long count calendar. The long count calendar allowed them to record 1,872,000 consecutive days. This period of time was known as a Great Cycle, which lasts approximately 5,125 years. According to time and date, scientists have determined that the current Great Cycle likely began on August 11th, 3114 B.C., making the end of the current Great Cycle land on December 21st, 2012.

Although no one knows for sure what is going to occur on December 21st, there are believers that the world will actually end.

Senior, Sierra James has an application on her phone that counts down the days until the world will end.

James believes the world will end and said, “In the movie 2012, New York flooded and now it actually flooded in real life.”

This is a huge coincidence, although it does not prove anything will actually happen on Friday, December 21st, 2012. There are some people who don’t’ care about scientific evidence, but go ahead and take action on their own.

The National Geographic Channel airs a television show called Doomsday Preppers in which families prepare their homes with stock rooms full of food and water. They keep updated food and purified water inside of storage closets just in case something major was to happen in the world.

These different families are evaluated on how they arm themselves, how much food is available for them to eat when in hiding, how much water they have, how well they are trained to defend themselves and their shelter for hiding. At the end of the show they are told how long they would have to survive if whatever crisis they believe is going to occur, was to occur.

James said, “I’m going to spend time with the people I love on December 21st.”

James doesn’t know for certain that the world will end on December 21st, but she doesn’t want to take a chance and not spend time with her close friends and family. Regardless on if the world is going to end, think about how you would want to spend your last day.
