Loy Norrix’s annual musical production is always highly anticipated by the community. This year’s production shines, from the scenic Greecian island created on stage to the angelic voices of the performers.
“Mama Mia!” is the musical Loy Norrix performers have chosen to tackle this year, and the school has been buzzing with lyrics from “Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money” and “Lay All Your Love On Me.”
Students worked tirelessly in rehearsals every day after school from 4-7 p.m. Rehearsals included dance, music and acting lessons. With meticulous attention to every lyric, pitch, and facial expression, nothing has been overlooked.
The musical has been moved from the springtime to the fall, so that it does not overlap with the schedule for forensics in the spring. Forensics is a competition involving public speaking, acting, and singing. The actors seem to feel much less pressure since they no longer have to split their time between the musical and competition.
“I think it’s best for everyone if it’s in the fall because forensics students do better in the show and are less stressed,” said junior Emily Edlefson, an ensemble member in “Mama Mia!”
“Mamma Mia!” was created around the music from the famous group “ABBA.” The catchy songs have taken on a new life in the musical which has had global popularity and was made into a movie and recently a sequel.
The most drastic contrast between the “Mamma Mia!” musical and the movie is that there are many more songs and more named characters in the musical. In the musical, the music is used to tell the story, and there is much less dialogue.
The show is sure to impress. Students and parents will enjoy “being able to hear the songs and also seeing everyone excited to sing them,” said Edlefson.
Opening weekend began on Friday, November 9th, and did not disappoint. The stage was transformed into a hotel on a Greek island. Lighting was used in unique ways to give the impression of the setting sun or stars hanging in the sky. The lead performances of seniors Abbie Hauke and Rebecca Thompson stood out. The two play mother and daughter in the musical and both have amazing voices.
Opening weekend has passed but there is still time to see the Loy Norrix students perform in “Mamma Mia!” Come to the Kasdorf Auditorium on November 15, 16, or 17 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students.
