An increasing number of students are choosing to spend their free time in the gym to boost both their physical fitness and mental well being.
Whether aiming to build muscle, stay in shape or manage stress, lots of students report that going to the gym on a regular basis has become a valuable part of their weekly routines. For many, the gym offers a structured environment to focus on personal goals outside of school responsibilities.
“I started going to the gym a few times a week because I wanted to be more active and have something to do outside of just school or sports,” said sophomore tennis player Veronica Nonato-Perez. “Going [to the gym] while playing tennis has made me feel really productive.”
Going to local gyms can also benefit mental health. The Better Health Channel cites that exercise has been linked to reduced stress, improved mood and increased focus. These factors are especially relevant for students who may be managing demanding schedules.
Sophomore Lily Hawthorne participates in multiple extracurricular activities, but she still finds time to go to the gym weekly because it helps with her mental wellbeing.
“I feel less anxious after working out,” said Hawthorne. “When I go to the gym, I don’t have to think about anything else and I can just focus on my workout.”
Hawthorne added that in addition to improved mental health, seeing her progress visually can keep her motivated to keep going.
“Getting stronger and being able to see it is really rewarding as well,” said Hawthorne.
Beyond aesthetic results, working out can also be a productive way for students to maintain good physical health. According to Mayo Clinic, consistent exercise can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and boost overall energy levels. For students who are balancing things like academics and extracurricular activities, these health benefits can translate into better overall performance in daily life.
Some students also find that the gym provides a sense of community. Working out alongside peers or with friends can increase motivation and make the experience more enjoyable. One student even says that he attends the gym solely because it allows him time to hang out with friends.
“I wouldn’t go if my friends didn’t come with me,” said sophomore Christopher McNeal. “Having the health benefits is a plus, but I like having an hour or two just to do something productive and hang out with friends.”
While balancing schoolwork and gym time can be challenging, many students believe the benefits outweigh the costs. Working out is a healthy outlet for many students that face stressors from school and other outside factors. For them, the gym is not just about fitness, but a way to support both their body and mind while connecting with peers as well.
