Attention Freshman and Juniors: We are looking for students to become a part of the Freshman and Junior Executive Committees. These committees are comprised of 24 leaders who want to organize events and fundraising for the class of 2025 and 2023. Petitions are available outside A-12 or by the main office. Return all completed forms to Ms. Van Lieu in A-12. Class officers of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer will be elected from this committee. The Travel Club will be flying to Italy and London/France in summer 2022. If you are interested in either trip the enrollment packets are outside A-12. Please plan on attending a zoom meeting on Thursday Sept. 23 at 7pm with a parent for further information. You may return enrollment forms to trip leaders Ms. Van Lieu A-12, Mrs. Lewis C-15 or Mr. Hernandez A-16. Do not delay as there are scholarships and discounts that will expire on Sept. 26. Don't delay ordering your official Tee Shirts for the Sophomore and Junior Classes. Order forms are outside room A-12. The sale will be extended until the end of September. Are you concerned about foreign hackers targeting our nation's companies and infrastructure like the Colonial Pipeline? If so, join us in M1 (lower M wing) for the cybersecurity club Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. We will talk about good cyber hygiene as well as prepare for the national cybersecurity competition Cyberpatriot. Registration for the competition ends Sept 30th so don't delay. Today’s Hispanic Heritage Month featured Latinx Person of the Day is Alma Flor Ada, A Cuban-American author of children's books, poetry and novels. She is recognized for her work promoting bilingual and multicultural education in the US. Alma Flor Ada was born in Camagüey, Cuba on January 3, 1938, to Modesto Ada Rey and Alma Lafuente.[3] She grew up in La Quinta Simoni,[3] a house owned by the family of Cuban revolutionary Ignacio Agramonte.[3] Born into a family of storytellers, poets, and educators,[4] she grew up hearing traditional tales re-told by her grandmother, father, and uncle. At the age of 15, she traded a quinceañera party for summer school in the United States, thus beginning her life as a bilingual person.[5][6] After completing high school in Cuba, she earned a scholarship to attend Loretto Heights College. There she first encountered discrimination against Mexican-Americans,[5] a discovery inspirational to her diversity appreciation efforts. After a year at Barry College in Miami,[3] she earned a Diploma de Estudios Hispanos with an Excellency Award at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.[5] She completed her Ph.D at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.[7] She was awarded a Fulbright Scholars Exchange Grant and appointed a Radcliffe Institute scholar at Harvard University[8] and prepared her dissertation for publication, Pedro Salinas: El diálogo creador.[9] In 1970, she and her four children relocated permanently to the United States.[1] She currently resides in Marin County, California, and has nine grandchildren.[3]

Coach Hawkins would like to report that the Men’s tennis team was successful in beating Three Rivers on Saturday 5-3. Everyone played well! Dominick Frost won 6-2, 6-3 Tom Clark won 6-4, 7-5 Wesley Baker won 6-2, 6-1 #1 Doubles Team Jack Bennett & Andrew Sedore worked hard and had 3 tie breakers. Conner Rafferty had the winning point in a 3-6, 6-6, and 10-2 tie breaker for the team win.

Congratulations to the Loy Norrix Forensics Team, as they competed this past weekend in Grand Rapids. The team overall took fourth place. A special shout out to the following competitors: Semifinalists: Emerson Wesselhoff, Melissa Preston, Riley Dominianni, Zoe Shanahan, Michaela Martin, Caila Chapman, and Maggie Grabemeyer. Finalists: Lily Dorstewitz - 5th in Poetry; Brooklyn Moore - 3rd in DI; James Hauke - 4th in Oratory; Ella Ledbetter-Newton, Greta Salamun, Liam Braun, Yacine Lo, Camille Bistrek & Keegan Cameron (Miss Congeniality) - 2nd in Multiple. There will be no yoga club today. Yoga club will resume next Tuesday at 2:45 pm. SSR is 4th hour today. Varsity golf tryouts will be today, March 10th at the Dome in Schoolcraft at 3:00 pm. On March 21 and 22 there will be the Peacejam Youth Leadership Conference at WMU. Come join hundreds of high school Peacejammers as they learn and interact with 2011 Nobel Laureate Tawakkol Karman from Yemen. She is the first Muslim in the world to receive this honor of a Nobel Peace Prize for securing Peacebulding and the democratic processes in Yemen. The registration is on Mrs. May's door. There are some scholarships to help with the registration fees. These need to get back to Mrs. May ASAP! Attention students: KRESA has a summer program called MyCITY. MyCity may be your answer to: What do you want to be when you grow up? Participants age 14-21 are exposed to career training, soft skills development, paid internships, financial literacy, a summer job and much more! The Loy Norrix swim and dive had a great performance this past weekend at the SMAC conference meet taking 5 overall and beating three teams they lost to during the regular season. Meet finalists include Izayah Balden, Alex Bosak, Joss Brent, Joe Bynum, James Harn, Nolan Hughes, Gryffin Hurley, Joe Mitchell, Tony Parlato, Erick Ponce, Evan Teal, Andrew VanHouten, Matthew Waltemyer, Roman Wassink, Keng Wee and Drew Dougherty earning 1st Team All-SMAC recognition Last night our divers competed in the MHSAA regional championships. Mitchell placed 14 and Ponce placed 11, qualifying himself for state. Ponce and Dougherty will compete next weekend at the MHSAA D2 State meet. Go Knights!! Chess Club meets today from 2:20 - 3:30 pm. Anybody may attend, and anyone who beats Mr. Bellware wins a customized chess board. The Interact club will be meeting today at 2:30 pm in the cafeteria. Ms. Christina, Rotary Club member will be in our meeting with spaghetti. Our community service at the Kalamazoo Gospel mission will be next Wednesday, March 11. Wow, Loy Norrix as a school we will be donating $1.765.43 to Serious Fun for terminally and seriously ill children in developing countries. Congratulations to the Loy Norrix Orchestra and Loy Norrix Band for earning Division 1 "Superior" ratings at the Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association's District Festival! This is the highest rating you can achieve from the panel of 4 professional music adjudicators. Both groups performed with high levels of musicianship, skill, and quality. They were outstanding representatives of our music department and our school. Amazing job and congratulations to Band and Orchestra students! Attention seniors!! Attention all students: Make sure you have reviewed your trimester three schedule. The last day that counselors will be taking schedule change request is Monday, March 9. Don't wait until the start of the new trimester if you need changes. Baseball tryouts will be on March 9, please see Coach Rickli in the Athletic office for important details. Attention Class of 2021: You have until Monday, March 2nd to turn in your submissions for our senior shirt and banner design. You can submit your designs by google docs, under Mrs. May's door or in her mailbox. Attention all students. The PBIS team will soon be hosting the 2nd Academic Celebration of the year. This celebration is to recognize student achievement from the 2nd trimester. In order to attend, you must meet the following qualifications from 2nd trimester: No Referrals and one of the following: 3.5 G.P.A., perfect attendance, or .5 increase in GPA from 1st to 2nd trimester. Make sure you are working hard and doing everything you can to finish up strong. Start studying now for your exams and make sure you have turned in all of your work. The Serious Fun effort to provide funding for terminally and seriously ill children in developing countries is almost ended- next Tuesday will be the last of the donation pick ups. If you haven't dropped a few, nickels, dimes, quarters in the milk donation jugs yet you still have time. YES, bills work also of course. WE currently have 54 classes participating and have collected $989.10 so far. The top ten classes are as follows: 10th is Frazier's class, 9th is Rolfe's class, 8th is Kitzman's class, 7th is Carrow's class, 6th is Bain/Claudio's class, 5th is Hernandez's class, 4th Peterson/May's class, 3rd is Rashad's class, 2nd is Allen/May's class, and once again in 1st place is Leander's class.
