After an 8-0 shut out streak, the Loy Norrix Women’s Varsity Soccer Team took their first loss against Battle Creek Lakeview Wednesday, May 1.

“I think we realized our full potential in the second half, but we weren’t aware of it in the first half,” said freshman Megan Zabik.

Zabik, one of the six freshmen on varsity, had a tough time sizing up to some of the bigger mid-fielders from the Lakeview team, and she was not the only one. Freshman, Amanda Jackson, also had some bigger competition. Although it is difficult for the freshmen to adjust to their first loss after their winning streak, they have the right mindset.

“It’s kind of a good thing that we lost because we learned how to react,” said Jackson. “I feel like we’re going to come back harder than if we hadn’t.”

This coming week, the girls play Gull Lake High School who is ranked 3rd in the second division for Michigan.

“We just need to be more focused and ready to play from the first minute in order to play at a high level,” said junior captain Mara Timmeney. “We have to forget it [the first loss] and focus on the next game.”

The team realizes that they cannot dwell on the past. They need to come together to keep their record positive.

“I think it’s our choice to let it affect the rest of the season,” said Timmeney, “and as a team we need to not let it.”

The girls are ready to put all their efforts on the field in future competitions. They have many challenging games to come, including the SMAC and District Tournaments.

“We need to know that we have the potential to beat them, but we can’t overestimate ourselves,” said Zabik.
