On September 12, 2013, Harry Potter fans worldwide released their cries of joy. It was official: Warner Bros Studios confirmed that author J.K. Rowling will be making her screenwriting debut on “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.”

Based on Rowling’s book written in 2001, the film will be set seventy years before the Harry Potter films, in 1920s New York. She wrote the text using the pseudonym “Newt Scamander”, who is the main character in the upcoming film. Scamander is a professor of “Magizoology” and records his findings in his book.

“The films, which will focus on the life of Newt Scamander, will neither be a prequel or sequel to the Harry Potter series, though will be set in the same world,” Rowling said.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the title of one of the books on Harry’s reading list in Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone. It contains the history of “Magizoology” and describes magical species found around the world. “Scamander” says that he collected most of the information found in the book through observations made over years of travel and across five continents.

Rowling explained that when Warner Bros pitched the idea, she was hesitant because she felt protective of the work.

“I already knew a lot about Newt,” she said. “As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favorite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.”

The optimism of Warner Bros about the film combined with Rowling’s passion for the magical world she created has encouraged fans. Kevin Tsujihara, the Chief Executive Officer of Warner Bros, attested to Rowling’s contribution to the movie’s positive future.

“She is an extraordinary writer, who ignited a reading revolution around the world, which then became an unprecedented film phenomenon,” Tsujihara said. “We know that audiences will be as excited as we are to see what her brilliant and boundless imagination conjures up for us.”
