Our Black History Month Person of the day is Asa Philip Randolph Asa Philip Randolph was an American labor unionist and civil rights activist. In 1925, he organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first successful African-American led labor union. In the early Civil Rights Movement and the Labor Movement, Randolph was a prominent voice. Randolph directed the March on Washington movement to end employment discrimination in the defense industry and a national civil disobedience campaign to ban segregation in the armed forces. The nonviolent protest and mass action effort inspired the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. AAC will be open today from 230-330 in the following rooms; english in k1, science in c17, esl support in k5w, and math and study hall in c16, Seniors! The final voting form for senior superlative mock elections for the Yearbook is open now! Check your email for the form, which will take less than five minutes to complete. The black history month person of the day is Bayard Rustin. Bayard Rustin was an African American leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. Rustin worked with A. Philip Randolph on the March on Washington Movement, in 1941, to press for an end to racial discrimination in employment. Loy Norrix swimming and diving took 3rd place this weekend at the Ottawa Hills Invitational. The knights host the portage northern huskies tomorrow night at 6:00. Come out and show your support. This week the boys bowling team took on Vicksburg. They came out on fire and bowled their highest baker game. Then we lost the 2nd baker game by 1 pin. This must have woken something in the team. The entire team rallied together and took control of the game. We only lost two points for both regular games. It was an incredible team effort with everyone stepping up to preserve our undefeated season. This week the girls bowled unopposed. Even though we didn’t have an opponent, our girls bowled with heart, and fulfilled some personal goals. Leading the way was Hope Dunn with a 175 and 173. Zoe Wazny contributed with a 151.

The men’s swimming and diving team made history last night with a 109-76 win over Portage Central. This was the teams first dual meet win against the Mustangs in program history! Cheer on the team next Tuesday as they go up against the Portage Northern Huskies at home. Protect the Castle! Our black history month person of the day is Zora Neale Hurston Zora Neale Hurston was an American author, anthropologist, and filmmaker. She portrayed racial struggles in the early-1900s. One of her most popular works was Their Eyes Were Watching God. The fictional story chronicled the tumultuous life of Janie Crawford. Hurston broke literary norms by focusing her work on the experience of a black woman. Hurston was not only a writer, she also dedicated her life to educating others about the arts.

Baldwin gained fame as a social activist in addition to being known as an author; he dedicated his life to analyzing the alienation felt by minority groups living in the United States and to the cause of gaining rights particularly for racial minorities and for the LGBTQ community. Baldwin's works helped to raise public awareness of racial and sexual oppression. His honest portrayal of his personal experiences in a national context challenged America to uphold the values it promised on equality and justice.

Attention All Travelers to Spain and Portugal: There will be a mandatory meeting to discuss important information about our upcoming trip to sunny Spain and exotic Portugal on Wednesday, February 1st in C-15, Mrs. Lewis's room at 7:00 P.M. Please park in the back lot and come to the door by Mrs. Lewis's room. You must have your LNHS ID to present at the outside door to gain entrance. This meeting is for those signed up to travel as well as parents/guardians This Saturday your Loy Norrix bowlers took on Otsego. The boys traded wins in the baker games, winning the first, but coming up a couple of pins short for the 2nd. We did win the series so no harm done. Then came the regular games and this is when we went to work. Led again by Hunter Conolly, 246 and Anthony Fotis, 220 we coasted easily to another Knights victory. The girls had some trouble with the ladies of Otsego, Losing both baker games. They quickly rallied back and won the 1st regular game. Leading the charge was Zoe Wazny with games of 148 and 159. Due to an injury, one of our girls had to drop out. Being short handed put the 2nd game just out of reach. Although we fought hard we came up just a little short. Next week we are in Three Rivers to take on Vicksburg. This may be the hardest test yet for our undefeated boys. Congratulations to our Hockey team with two good results over the weekend. The team tied Essexville Garber 2-2 on Friday but won the rematch on Saturday 3-2 to hit the victory column. Their next game is Wednesday vs. Jackson Lumen Christi. Congratulations to the Women’s Varsity Basketball as they moved to 8-5 on the season with their 28-19 win over Gull Lake. That is the first win over Gull Lake in nearly a decade. The Women’s teams will host Kalamazoo Christian on Wednesday. Don’t hear your team's results? Please make sure your coach submits an email for announcements or reports the result. The Ski Teams finally compete today and Wednesday at 4:30 at Timber Ridge. Tickets for tonight’s Men’s Basketball at Kalamazoo Central are available at GoFan.co Search under Kalamazoo Central since it is their home game. Freshman 4:15/JV 5:45/Varsity 7:00 Congratulations to Ana Dunfee, Wendy Miedema, and James Rocco for being three finalists in the highly competitive MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award. There were over 1500 applications. They didn’t finish in the top 6 but they made it through the first 2 rounds of judging to make the finals. By doing so, they doubled the amount of finalists we have had in the last 20 years. They helped make Loy Norrix finish with the second highest number of finalists for the year in the state. Congratulations to Ana, Wendy, and James!

Our Swimmer Knights protected the castle last night against the Bridgman Bees. Swimmers got their job done in the pool, divers on the board for a team win! Knights are 5-2 on the season. Loy Norrix 107, Bridgman 79. Winterfest 2023 will begin on Monday! The spirit days will be: Monday- Character Day- Dress as your favorite character from a book, movie, TV show, stage play, anything you can come up with. Tuesday- Country vs. Country Club- Dress in your favorite country attire or dress in your country club attire. You can Google this and many ideas from different high schools will pop up. Wednesday- Formal Day, Dress up and look your best. Thursday- Celebrity Day, This day is looking like your favorite celebrity in any area- Music, Movies, TV, etc. Friday- Blue and White Day- wear your Norrix gear or blue and white. There will be penny wars starting Monday. Drop off your pennies in the Athletic Office next week. Pennies are points for your class. The Kalamazoo Community Foundation scholarship is now open! You can fill out one application and be eligible for over 65 scholarships. Attention All Travelers to Spain and Portugal: There will be a mandatory meeting to discuss important information about our upcoming trip to sunny Spain and exotic Portugal on Wednesday, February 1st in C-15, Mrs. Lewis's room at 7:00 P.M. Please park in the back lot and come to the door by Mrs. Lewis's room. You must have your LNHS ID to present at the outside door to gain entrance. Winterfest 2023 will begin on Monday! The spirit days will be: Monday- Character Day- Dress as your favorite character from a book, movie, TV show, stage play, anything you can come up with. Tuesday- Country vs. Country Club- Dress in your favorite country attire OR dress in your country club attire. You can Google this and many ideas from different high schools will pop up. Wednesday- Formal Day, Dress up and look your best. Thursday- Celebrity Day, This day is looking like your favorite celebrity in any area- Music, Movies, TV, etc. Friday- Blue and White Day- wear your Norrix gear or blue and white. There will be penny wars starting Monday. Drop off your pennies in the Athletic Office next week. Pennies are points for your class.
